Cutting Sandwiches

Apr 16, 24

I didn’t feel like cooking, but the girls were bellyaching, so I made some ham/turkey sandwiches on plain white bread, and when I cut the sandwiches in half, I cut one down the middle, and I cut one across the corners and handed each sandwich to the appropriate girl. Flan remarked, did you do that on purpose? I said, yes, but that was only half true. See, we’d had this discussion before, how one girl likes her sandwich cut down the middle, and how the other prefers it cut corner to corner. Thing is, I wasn’t thinking about that when I cut the sandwiches. I was on autopilot. Make the sandwiches. Cut the sandwiches. Serve the sandwiches. I wasn’t conscious of how I ought to cut the sandwiches. I just cut them that way. That was Brain. Further, I never would have been conscious of doing it had the girl never brought it up. Now that I am conscious of it, I can access those memories and see myself doing it.
